Before Care
Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, it's important to prepare your skin at least a week before your tattoo appointment:
-
Stay hydrated: Drink 2-3 liters of water daily. Surprisingly, oily skin can be dehydrated, causing the body to produce more oil. Proper hydration helps balance oil levels and promotes healthier skin.
-
Moisturise regularly: Moisturising is key, even for oily skin. A good moisturiser softens your skin and helps regulate oil production, reducing the risk of a patchy tattoo or ink not settling properly.
Dry Skin
If you have dry skin, start preparing at least a week before your tattoo session:
-
Stay hydrated: Hydration is crucial for dry skin. Aim to drink 2-3 liters of water daily to keep your skin well-hydrated.
-
Exfoliate gently: Before your appointment, gently exfoliate the area to remove dead skin cells, preventing uneven healing or a patchy appearance.
-
Moisturise daily: Use a rich moisturiser, such as cocoa butter. Regular moisturising softens the skin, making it more receptive to the tattooing process and promoting even healing.
Unsure of Your Skin Type?
If you're unsure of your skin type, it's best to follow all the steps above. This comprehensive approach ensures your skin is in the best possible condition for tattooing, whether it's oily or dry.
Why Is This Important?
-
Oily skin often absorbs ink more slowly, making it difficult for the tattoo to settle properly. Proper pre-care helps balance oil levels and enhances the tattooing process.
-
Dry skin can absorb ink too quickly, leading to a patchy appearance as the tattoo heals. By focusing on hydration, exfoliation, and moisturising, you can reduce the risk of this issue.

Aftercare
Day 1-4
-
Remove any plastic wrap after 2 hours if used.
-
Keep your tattoo dry for the first 24 hours.
-
Gently wash your tattoo with antibacterial soap and warm water.
-
Pat dry with a fresh, clean towel or tissue.
-
Apply tattoo ointment at least 3 times a day, ideally 4-6 times, ensuring it is well absorbed.
-
Continue washing, drying, and applying ointment morning and night until the scabbing phase begins.
-
Avoid soaking your tattoo—stick to quick showers while it heals.
Day 5-14
-
Scabbing is normal during this time—let it heal naturally. No picking, scratching, or peeling.
-
Switch from ointment to a moisturiser, like cocoa butter, and apply it at least 3 times a day.
-
Fine line tattoos require careful aftercare due to the lighter ink placement. Keeping your tattoo well-hydrated is crucial for the best results.
-
Your tattoo may need a touch-up, especially depending on the area. This is completely normal.
